Harry Maguire appeared to play a big part in Manchester United’s first goal in the 3-1 win against Newcastle on Sunday as footage of him shouting instructions at Marcus Rashford came to light.
Rashford opened the scoring after half-an-hour of the encounter at Old Trafford with a fine finish inside Karl Darlow’s near post.
And although Allan Saint-Maximin equalised for the Magpies shortly afterwards, second-half goals from Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes sealed the three points for United.
Rashford’s strike was only his second Premier League goal of 2021, and he will be hoping it spells the start of a more prolific scoring run in the weeks ahead.
But he may well have been left thanking United captain Maguire for his guidance in the seconds leading up to his finish.
Pitch-side cameras picked up audio from the moment Rashford received the ball on the left wing from Maguire’s pass.
The centre-back bellows at him “get in the box!”, at which point he does indeed cut inside on and takes on Newcastle’s right-back Emil Krafth.
Maguire then adds “go on Rashy!” and then encourages “take him on!”
As Rashford beats his man Maguire can then be heard shouting “shoot!” at which point the England forward does indeed pull the trigger to put his side in front.
Rashford then celebrates with his teammates, with Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial among those to run and congratulate him.
Rashford’s goal saw him draw level with United legend David Beckham in netting a total of 85 times for the club.
And after the game he sent a tweet with a picture of himself scoring along with the caption: “Joined some great company tonight, matching Becks record. Happy Sunday everyone.”
He also congratulated 17-year-old midfielder Shola Shoretire after he made his debut by coming on as a late substitute, adding: “Cherish this moment for ever little bro. Your family must be very proud.”
